Video : What is The 1922 Committee?

Meeting of the 1922 Committee

From a humble ‘Class of 1922’ to becoming one of the most powerful, yet elusive bodies in British Politics.

Why is it called The 1922? Who are these ‘men in grey suits’ who can tell a Prime Minister when their time is up? How much power do they really have in a moment of political crisis?

In its early days, The 22 invited such great speakers that it was in danger of becoming a glorified lecture club – Sir Ivor Jennings bemoaned the fact that the meetings were usually more interesting and therefore more popular than the debates in the House! Winston Churchill was among them when he used the platform to promote a policy of disarmament.

It eventually became a committee which included all backbench Conservative MPs, meeting weekly to discuss matters independent of ministers and raise concerns about leadership.

This is a short intro to the 1922 Committee and to Lord Norton’s brand new book on the subject!
